I bought this version because the eheim version costs almost 3x as much and this one gets good reviews from folks at Plantedtank. To attach it to my Eheim intake (5/8" not 1/2"), I used the 90* elbow and joined the intake pipe to it using a short segment of 5/8" hose. The black center piece that stick up is the adjuster which opens and closes the lower openings. The more you allow flow through the bottom, the less the surface suction will be. Also, I had to drill a piece of plastic from my canopy to accommodate the height of the adjuster. But in so doing, you can increase or decrease the surface skimmer flow on the fly. Just remember to keep the top of the surface skimmer clean periodically.

Previously, I had a sponge prefilter on my intake pipe. I could still have one--just cut a short 2" piece of foam and slip it over the lower intake.

There are some bubbles being entrained into the intake from the surface water being sucked in. This has not been an issue. However, those with CO2 injected tanks should understand that outgassing of CO2 will occur from this area. This may not be a problem with intermittent activation--turn the center adjuster for a brief period when surface scum accumulates, then turn off most of the surface flow once the surface scum is cleared (takes about 20" or so).

Seachem Reef Iodide 2 Liter Overview

Reef Iodide™ is a concentrated (8,000 mg/L) stabilized potassium iodide source for reef aquaria that will restore and maintain iodide levels to those found in natural sea water. It is formulated to provide a safe source of iodide that will not convert to toxic free iodine under storage or reef conditions. Iodine is as toxic as chlorine and should never be used in a reef system. However, iodide is as safe as chloride. Most iodine supplements on the market are simply potassium iodide or a medicinal disinfectant commonly known as Lugol’s Solution. Lugol’s is a highly concentrated iodine/iodide solution that is highly toxic and intended for disinfection. Although such products are sold for use in reef aquaria, we believe the risks vastly outweigh the potential minor benefits. Potassium iodide only products are a safer alternative but not very effective alone owing to the unstable nature of iodide in the aquarium environment. When added to an aquarium environment, iodide becomes unstable converting to elemental iodine (which is biocidal), iodate (which is useless to corals, toxic at elevated levels, and can't be tested for), and iodide which is the only form of iodine available to corals for uptake. These products' inherent instability makes them potentially dangerous to coral health.Unlike competing products, Reef Iodide™ is complexed to a stabilizing compound in order to keep it in the iodide form when added to the aquarium. A frequent occurence in reef systems is low pH, while calcium and alkalinity are at optimal levels. Raise one and the others may fall. I use these for each of my male hamsters (they have seperate cages). I got them these when they were just babies so they grew up with it. They only use it for #1 and still go #2 in the cage but really that's where the smell is coming from. I don't actually scoop anything cause it doesn't work but I just dump the whole thing out and refill it. It's pretty sturdy and i haven't had any parts break. Start your animals off with this early and it's great for keeping the cages smell to a minimum.

Animals vary greatly in temperment so if you can borrow a friends clipper to try on your animal first I recommend it before making the investment. We have two cats so this clipper more or less paid for itself the first year in use.

We tried my sister's animal clipper the first year. The second year we tried two from Target and one from Petsmart. Finally bit the bullet and got this one from Petsmart. Pricier than the first we bought from them but worth it. (They were kind enough to let us return the first one)

In hindsight, if we had the option of buying the clipper only we would have as we don't need all the combs, and if you don't need the extras you can get the clipper by itself for a lot less. The black plastic molded case ours came with is very convenient, however.

Be careful when buying this clipper - the actual model of the clipper is MBG2 and it comes with a #10 blade. THERE ARE TWO ANDIS "PET PRO" CLIPPERS and the other one (The body is shorter, without the swoopy curve on the handle) doesn't get very good reviews.

Himalayan cats are like Persians and have massive amounts of extremely fine hair. The other clippers we tried bogged down immediately and got very hot. This blazes through and is also quieter and cooler than the other ones which is good since our Siamese is jumpy.

In terms of cat-trimming technique, we first trim all the nails (just in case) then sit on a chair on our deck, with a towel in our lap.

Cat in lap on towel, pet for a few minutes until they purr, then start clipping. It helps to keep some tension on their skin with the other hand. Imagine you are petting with your left hand to your left, and the clipper is in your right hand moving to your right.

My ratings: 1 star: Avoid! / 2 stars: Some merit but I can't recommend / 3 stars: Decent, nice / 4 stars: Recommended / 5 stars: Nearly perfect!

We are caring for a pair of Lovebirds that were shelter rescues. One was very plucked by her mate and cannot fly and tends to fall. They both love this activity center but she is doing very well navigating it with her disability. She is growing back her feathers and seems to be enjoying her out of cage time. I actually found it fairly sturdy. For small birds it works good and seems to have enough going on to keep them interested. I cannot imagine a better little set up for budgies, lovebirds and cockatiels. There are also enough places to attach other toys to expand it.

As with anything new introduction should be slow. Put play stand in view but away from cage for a week or two then gradually move it closer. Once it is next to the cage then allow them to use it by coming out of cage on own and climbing down to play center. If the first reaction is strong or you have a single shy bird I would only put a couple of toys on to start and a a new one each week.
